Viana do Alentejo

Viana do Alentejo is a quiet village in the Évora district of Alentejo. Besides the Castle and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aires, you must not miss its picturesque streets and take the time to appreciate the region’s traditional handicrafts, especially pottery. Also noteworthy is the manufacture of chocalhos (cowbells), a craft and cultural tradition of Alentejo — particularly in Alcáçovas (Viana do Alentejo) — which has been classified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. In April, the village hosts the famous Pilgrimage on Horseback, with hundreds of participants riding from Moita to Viana do Alentejo.
