Faial island

It is one of the most sought after and most cosmopolitan islands in the Azores, and its port is famous among sailors who cross the North Atlantic. The island of Faial is quite rich in terms of testimonies of volcanic activity, accessible to the visitor. In addition to the magnificent Caldeira volcano, topped by a caldera which, at the top is about 2 km in diameter, to the west there is an alignment of relatively recent volcanic cones, which ends in the Capelinhos Volcano. The latter is the result of the eruption of a submarine volcano, which took place between September 1957 and October 1958. Next to the old lighthouse, the modern Capelinhos Volcano Interpretive Center was recently built, with various exhibitions and multimedia information, aimed at reporting the geological history. islands and in particular the Capelinhos eruption. Castelo Branco "Morro" and Monte da Guia, in the southwest part of the island, are also evidence of the volcanism of Faial that are worth a visit. Monte da Guia, a protected landscape area, incorporates a submarine cone (Caldeira do Inferno), and is connected to the city by an isthmus. Faial is one of the islands of the central group with the best sandy beaches, in particular the beaches of Almoxarife, Porto Pim, as well as its privileged view of the island of Pico.
